The process of self assessment has helped me to reflect on the goals that I have set for my future, both long and short term. I have had a very eventful past that has taught me how to persevere. I have learned that negative situations don't have to stay negative and can be changed for the better. As a child of immigrants to the United States, the product of inner city New York, and as an immigrant myself, I have learned that paths in life can be difficult to trod, and that sometimes the benefits of hard work are not seen immediately. The life that I have lived this far has shown me that with faith, it is still possible to be successful. One thing that resonates when I speak of faith and will, are the truths that faith and will should not be the only things that people feel they have to rely on. I think that people should be able to express faith not only in themselves or spiritual beliefs, but in the environments and systems that make up the interactions in their lives. I think that people have a right to receive the best treatment and care that the community can provide.
My ultimate goal is to be remembered for the work that I have done. I feel that the best way to achieve this is to be as impactful as I possibly can be in the role that I play as an advocate for social change. Making a positive impact in my community will validate my hard work and bring me a sense of peace knowing that I, as a civilian, was able to contribute to community wellness and safety. In order to achieve my long term goals I have set out some short term ones to achieve. I have indicated the timelines in segments of 3 month timeframes spanning from June 2023 to June 2024.
3 months (September 2023)Return to school at Sheridan after a productive summer research project and lots of self care goals met.6 months (December 2023)Complete all assignments maintaining my high GPA and meeting the outlined project deliverables for my work. Commence another successful annual International Day to End Violence Against Women Event and actively campaign for awareness for my project during this year’s 16 days of activism. Decide which Bachelor program to enrol in September9 months (March 2023)Disseminate the published research study at work. Wrapping up all assignments and completing any relevant readings. Get high marks on final assignments and exams in order to maintain GPA 12 months (June 2023) Graduate from SSW program in April and gather all necessary information to create a goals timeline for year 1 of Bachelor program. Apply to a Bachelor program with intent to attend in September 2024. Continue raising awareness about GBV in the region and the advocacy work that I am doing in Peel related to the issue.
Completing these goals will not only permit me to feel proud of my accomplishments at the end of the one year period, it will give me an example of the method to success that is planning. The ability to see that I have met particular goals even when difficulties arose, will encourage me to continue using this method moving forward. Sharing these goals that I have set as well as their outcomes, would also help me empower others who may be in need of goal setting practices as well.
